A concrete block building along with 35 computers were donated to the community of Nueva Esperanza by the Spanish government. However, the cost of electricity in the community was $0.38/kW-hr. and the temperature in the building would climb to over 113 Fahrenheit. A team of Penn State students, along with the community and the NGO Voices on the Border designed an alternative energy system using anaerobic digesters which utilized the animal wastes as feed to produce methane gas.
