Following the signing of the peace treaty in the early 1990's in El Salvador, land redistribution resulted in many wounded veterans, both government soldiers and guerillas, obtaining land in rural areas. Nueva Esperanza was one such community, populated by many double amputees. These men typically had to wade chest deep waters along with their animals and wagons to access their agricultural lands. Penn State students partnered with the NGO Voices on the Border to design and construct a bridge to alleviate this situation in a very cost effective manner.
